WHY SHOULD YOU ROAST AT HOME?
We all have the same creed: loving coffee and aiming for the best. That’s why! Brewing coffee is all about control and adding as much control as we can over our homebrewing process. We don’t talk here about the type of gear: manual, automatic, or semi-automatic. They all allow us to gain more control. Is it really worth it?
We at Golden Sin think that there are about 2 main advantages to roasting at home. You can have more control of your roast level. There are different roast levels, but when you buy this, you never know exactly what “level” of roast you have. Yes, it will say dark, but bring multiple dark roasts and you still don’t know how long they’ve been roasted, etc…
You can make your blends at home, you can thus control more according to your brewing method. If you’ve roasted a bit too far then you can mix it with another small batch to balance more etc.
Of course, doing this all at home means that you’ll have to invest money and a lot of your own time. Brewing coffee is relaxing, gives you time to think and reflect on most things. It’s a time that you don’t have to do this or that. When smelling the coffee, it’s all worth it right? We all stress away at our jobs, thinking about the next months, and forget to enjoy the great things in life. Think about self-care and minimalism, why not enjoy both at the same time?
THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A HOME COFFEE ROASTER
To be clear with you: you don’t need this tool for a great cup of coffee. But it can reduce stress, whether it’s because of the roasting process or not. Coffee is all about control and buying a home coffee roaster gives you more of it.
If you opt for a coffee home roaster, please think about the following “issues”:
#1. Budget
Staying in your lane in finance is very important. There are good (manual roasters) under $100 and between $100 and $500. There are even more expensive alternatives, like the BOCABOCA coffee roaster. You don’t need the best one for a great experience though. Remember, we’re trying to add control of our homebrewing process.
#2. Automic or manual?
Do you want to put in the effort and time when roasting? By all means, go for a manual one but know that you must stay focused. Automatic coffee roasters are more expensive but make your life a bit easier.
#3. Capacity
Capacity is important if you drink a lot of coffee and brew large amounts. Most home roasters aren’t made to brew large batches of coffee. It makes sense really because coffee beans degrade fast in flavor and quality after the roasting process. You don’t want to waste a lot of these. Think about how much you drink coffee, how regular you want to drink it, will you serve for multiple visitors, people, etc.? Or do you have a passion you want to perfect, like us ;)!
#4. Smoke regulation
Roasting produces a lot of smoke. Think about the place you’ll use it. You’d best use it in a place where there’s good ventilation. If you can’t do it outside, think about buying a roaster with a smoke suppression system. You don’t want your smoke detectors to work right?
#5. Built-in timer
This is a nice-to-have thing. A built-in stopwatch gives you that extra control. You can also do this with other tools like your watch, smartwatch, smartphone.
#6. Built-in thermometer
This is convenient for the roasting process and gives you extra control. A lot of these roasters don’t have this function and you simply don’t know where you’re at. You can perfect this with experience and using the same tools to perfect things. Investing in a more expensive one can avoid this ‘stress’.
#7. Cooling
It’s clear that smoke-producing gear is hot and must cool down fast. You’d want to have control over this because after the roasting, the beans will keep roasting and this will result in an unevenly roasted batch. Investing in a coffee roaster that has a cooling down function can save your day! You don’t want to do all this effort to end with an unbalanced taste.
#8. Cleaning the chaff
Some coffee roasters come with a chaff collection system and make your cleaning job a lot easier. This one goes hand in hand with the production of smoke. Not all coffee roasters have a chaff collection system, so think about the place and time when roasting the beans (see #6 above).
F.A.Q.
IS HOME COFFEE ROASTING WORTH IT?
Yes, yes, yes!!! It can be worth the time and effort to gain that extra level of control in your homebrewing process. It depends on yourself but it’s key to control the flavor, taste, and freshness of your coffee. Coffee is best consumed within the week after it’s roasted.
WHAT IS THE BEST HOME COFFEE ROASTER?
This is a personal opinion but well thought out the answer since we’re homebrewing and not running a coffee shop. We think that you can’t do wrong with the Fresh Roast SR540. There’s a wide range available. Some roasters start around the $ 900 mark. We think the SR540 will improve your coffee journey a lot!
CAN YOU ROAST YOUR OWN COFFEE BEANS AT HOME?
Yes, you only need heat and the right equipment. There’s a wide range available, from popcorn makers to specially made coffee roasters for their simplicity, experience, and convenience. The latter can give you more control over the roasting process. Even an oven or pan can do the trick.
HOW SOON AFTER ROASTING CAN I DRINK COFEE?
Before drinking, you need to let the roasted coffee beans rest. You’d best wait about 12-24 hours. You must already know for what brewing method you’ll use these roasted beans or start making your blend. After that, you can start brewing and enjoy that cup of coffee. Remember, roasted coffee is best consumed within the week for the best experience.
CONCLUSION
A home coffee roaster is not necessary for brewing a great cup of coffee but gives you the edge, thus more control in your brewing process and coffee experience. We at Golden Sin think that the Fresh Roast SR540 is the best pick for your money to give you that edge!
Enjoy your coffee!
