WHAT IS A BREVE COFFEE?

A breve coffee is a semi-sweet espresso-based drink that’s made with steamed milk and half of an ounce of fresh cream. It’s a combination of the classic latte, cappuccino, and mocha into one delicious cup.

WHAT DOES BREVE MEAN AND WHERE DOES THE NAME COME FROM?

When it comes to coffee and espresso, in particular, Italians know a thing or two about it.

Breve comes from the Italian word “brevità”, which can be translated to English as “short” or “brief”. In French, it’s “brève”. I think you get the idea, little, short.

It’s the American version of the Italian classic cafe latte. The latter is, as the name suggests, milk-based. The main difference between the breve and the latte is that the foam is thicker because of the extra air (cream).

A breve is also called cafe breve, latte breve, or just breve coffee depending on where you live or where you buy your coffee.

When you’re served properly, you’ll have to receive a nice espresso with creamy milk added to it. Normally there are no sweeteners added afterward.

DIFFERENT BREVES IN CHAINS AND SPECIALTY COFFEESHOPS?

When you’re abroad and ordering a breve coffee, thus wanting an espresso with creamy milk and no sugar, you can get something different depending on where you buy it.

Great coffee chains like Starbucks and Dutch Bros, you’ll get milk instead of the classic half and half (milk and cream). One of the reasons is that half and half aren’t that available in large quantities.

When you buy from an Italian barista or local specialty coffee shop, you’ll most likely get the authentic version of the “breve”.

Depending on the country you ask, the name might be different. In France they tend to say “café au lait” and they like to add a bit of sugar afterward.

As a consumer, you can’t know all the local changes and tweaks to a certain product.

BENEFITS OF DRINKING BREVE COFFEE?

1. CAFFEINE CONTENT

They can give you a shot of caffeine and can give you extra focus for a period of time. So more caffeine, more happiness?

2. SWEET ‘SPOT’

These drinks are really sweet depending on where you buy them. Great chains generally add sweeteners like syrups to it, making it a small calorie bomb.

You can also get sugar and milk added to it as well

3. CREAMY TEXTURE AND EXPERIENCE

According to us, we say that this is key for a good breve coffee. You must have a creamy and full experience. A breve that’s not creamy is not a breve, it’s as simple as that!

This one is self-explanatory, right? This is a must in our opinion. It should be smooth and creamy with the espresso shot being the main flavor. If you are served anything else, please mention something as this is frustrating for both you and the barista.

If I just said “more caffeine”, that would be a good answer.

HOW TO MAKE A BREVE COFFEE AT HOME?

Here we’ll cover how you make a great breve coffee at home.

A breve isn’t that hard to make. If you use an espresso machine, the steps are as follows:

1) You need cold milk to increase foaming.

2) A normal espresso shot of about 45 ml is used (if you use an espresso machine). Otherwise, you can ask your barista for advice on how much is needed from your own coffee maker or play with these ratios.

3) Pour in full cream with a bit of coffee in it and keep stirring until good foam forms.

4) pour the coffee into your cup, very slowly and that’s about it.

You can also make one at home without any fancy espresso machine, but it makes the job easier for sure.

ARE BREVES BAD FOR YOUR HEALTH?

In certain cases, yes.

Cafe Breve has a lot more calories when compared to its latte and other counterparts. This is because half and a half and fat percentage are much higher.

If you have high blood pressure or if you’re just plain sensitive to caffeine, we advise you not to drink this. And if you suffer from anxiety/stress by consuming too much caffeine for your body. You can lower your portions so you can enjoy it to the fullest.

Think about the fact that, depending on where you order a breve, you’ll get one enriched with syrups and/or other sweeteners.

Personally, I would save these breves for special occasions when you’re celebrating your birthday or something like that.

There’s nothing wrong with a small Golden Sin right?

WHAT SWEETENERS CAN YOU ADD TO YOUR CAFE BREVE?

We already know that a cafe breve or breve coffee is a combination of espresso with half milk and half cream. The average % of fat is at least about 10% if you want a creamy texture and foamy experience.

Since there’s naturally enough sugar or sweetness in our cup of coffee, we don’t advise you to add extra sweeteners. If you insist, you add chocolate, sugar, honey, cinnamon, and so on…

This can give you possible health issues so we don’t advise this to do so. If you do so, lower your portions so you can still have a great experience.

CONCLUSION
